Connor Wickham (Ipswich Town)

Post by lfcJT07 on Wed Feb 23, 2011 1:20 am

Since Rumors are flying all over the place that we are going to sign this lad, best off starting a thread.

£10m for a 17 year old striker. He is also a lifelong Red apparently.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1335945/Liverpool-line-10m-deal-Ipswich-teenager-Connor-Wickham--EXCLUSIVE.html - link from december.

Could this lad be the answer to our back up striker problem? i do like the fact that we are trying to sign more young english players...but is he worth 10million?

10 Mill for a 17 years old who plays in the championship??!

Don't get me wrong he maybe talented but 10 million is way OTT.

Then again considering how ridiculous prices have gone i guess its reasonable then. Laughing

I know 10 million is obscene! but he is considered the next best English striker, we dont move for him you just know Arsenal or United will.

Spurs are the frontrunners to get him, not surprisingly seeing as Defoe hasn't even scored in the PL yet

Yeah according to reports they are at the top of the queue. I think the best move for him would be to come here. We wouldn't throw him straight away, we'd ease him in with Carroll and Suarez here already. Arsenal could be a good move for him too but the amount of striking options they have is incredible so he'll probably never get a game there.

The lads not bad, good for his young i guess. No where near the 10 million price though! I'd offer 3-5 Mill.

I'd rather prefer if we focus on the players we need and then look for future potential strikers..
If NESV are willing to splash 10 extra mill on a future prospect then why not!

Dalglish bid to Kop Connor Wickham
10th Apr 2011

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is ready to win the race for Ipswich hot-shot Connor Wickham – and beat old pal Harry Redknapp to his signature.

Wickham has just signed a new deal at Portman Road, but that will not stop a transfer going through if Liverpool come up with the asking price of around £10million.

The Kop chief has been on Wickham's trail for months, watching him for club and country. He sees Wickam as the perfect capture to give him a young striker behind Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.

Spurs supremo Redknapp is after Wickham too - as People Sport first revealed - but Dalglish's entry to the race will turn the head of the teenage terror.

Dalglish wants to sign a handful of players when he gets the go-ahead and is officially named long-term boss at the Kop. He would like to improve his squad and bring in younger players.

The Liverpool boss is also chasing Wigan's James McCarthy and Dalglish hopes to get the cash backing to buy Wickham in the next transfer window.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid are lining up a move for Liverpool's Milan Jovanovic.

The Serbian midfielder has found it difficult to make an impact at Anfield and is set for talks over his future this summer.

Atletico are confident they stand a good chance of landing him, if Liverpool sell, as the two clubs have a good relationship from previous transfer deals.

Should we buy him?

If Fenway Sports group are seriously willing to spend a huge 100m on us this summer, then he can become a possibility. 10million is a lot money to spend on an 18 year old.

Re: Connor Wickham (Ipswich Town)

Tony Barrett, James Ducker 1 minute ago

Liverpool’s pursuit of the best available young English players has led to an offer of almost £8 million being lodged with Ipswich Town for Connor Wickham. The club are also stepping up their attempt to sign Jordan Henderson, the Sunderland midfield player.

Wickham, who scored nine goals last season, is valued at £10 million by Ipswich and the 18-year-old centre forward has also been targeted by Tottenham Hotspur. However, Liverpool are confident that the opportunity to become part of an array of attacking talent that includes Luis Suárez and Andy Carroll will convince Wickham that his future lies at Anfield rather than White Hart Lane.

Damien Comolli, Liverpool’s director of football, watched Wickham on several occasions last season and is understood to have been impressed by his all-round game, regarding the England Under-21 international as a potential star of the future.

Although their opening offer is likely to be rejected by Ipswich, Liverpool are hopeful that a compromise fee can be reached that will suit both clubs.

Liverpool’s transfer strategy this summer is built on a determination to sign players for the future who can also play an immediate part in Kenny Dalglish’s squad. The desire to lower the average age of the club’s playing staff is derived from the ambition of John W. Henry, Liverpool’s principal owner, to oversee the creation of a team who can challenge for leading honours for years to come, rather than just in the coming season.

The Merseyside club’s transfer targets will be predominantly drawn from players under the age of 26. There will be exceptions to the rule under certain circumstances, but the long-term strategy is built around constructing a young, vibrant squad that is capable of playing fast flowing, attacking football.

No deal has yet been struck between Liverpool and Sunderland for Henderson, but the Anfield club are looking for a fee to be agreed before the 20-year-old goes to Denmark with the England Under-21 squad next Wednesday for the European Championship.

Neither Liverpool nor Sunderland would confirm whether an offer has been made for the player, but talks have taken place in which the North East club have made it clear that they would not accept the £15 million offer that Comolli was hoping would be sufficient to secure the transfer.

It is thought that Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager, is holding out for about £18 million for Henderson, who has attracted interest from Manchester United and Manchester City over the past 12 months. Liverpool are unlikely to meet that price, but are believed to be ready to return with a bid in the region of £16 million as they continue with their recruitment plans for the coming season.

As revealed in April, Phil Jones, the Blackburn Rovers central defender, is another target for Liverpool, who are expecting a busy summer in the transfer market, according to Comolli.

Steve Kean, the Blackburn manager, warned Jones this week that he may struggle to secure a first-team place at a top Barclays Premier League club, but the defender is thought to have set his heart on a move away from Ewood Park.

Liverpool face competition from Arsenal for Jones, with Arsène Wenger, the North London club’s manager, eager to build his defence around the 19-year-old England Under-21 international and Thomas Vermaelen, the Belgium centre back whose long-term absence with an Achilles tendon injury was keenly felt last season.

Blackburn also face a battle to keep Christopher Samba, with Tottenham interested in the defender.

No longer a rumour, both @TonyBarrettTimes and @DuckerTheTimes have confirmed that Liverpool have made a £8m. Just whether Ipswich accept or not now although they both believe they will hold out for more. I think Wickham would want a move here, he grew up a LFC fan and will desperate for the move. Really exciting times!

LIVERPOOL AGREE FEE FOR CONNOR WICKHAM

We have on good advice that Liverpool have agreed a fee with Ipswich for England U21 striker Connor Wickham. The 18-year-old who is currently away at the European U21s tournament has been tracked by the Anfield club for sometime.

It is not sure if personal terms and a medical will take place before or after Wickham returns from International duty.

This deal, once completed, will only further confirm that David Ngog is likely to be sold by the Reds, it was previously believed that the French youngster would move to Sunderland as part of the Jordan Henderson deal, however, this might not be the case.

With Wickham and Henderson joining the likes of Kelly, Shelvey, Robinson, Flanagan, Spearing and co, Dalglish is showing signs of building a young British team full of potential stars.

The fee for Wickham is believed to be around £8m-£10m.
