Fernando Torres Statement

Post by lfcJT07 on Sat Mar 13, 2010 3:24 pm

Torres Set To Consider Future

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has questioned the club's ambition and says he is thinking about his future.

The Reds forward has been part of a side that has had a disappointing campaign so far - Monday's defeat at Wigan dented their chances of a top-four Premier League finish and a 1-0 reverse to Lille in the Europa League on Thursday leaves them with a tough task of progressing into the next round.

Many have speculated that Liverpool's key players could leave Anfield if they do not qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League, but Torres has played down such reports.

However, the 25-year-old, who has scored 13 league goals in 18 appearances so far this term, says that Rafa Benitez needs to bring in more quality players to bolster the squad.

"It's too soon to talk, I honestly think that we're going to be fourth, but for me Champions League qualification isn't so important," he told Spanish newspaper AS.

"The really important thing is that the club makes a big effort and brings in important players, who will improve the quality of the squad.

"We need four or five top-class players to compete, better than we have here, who will make us grit our teeth and do everything we can to try and keep our places.

"Without reinforcements next year we will once again be fighting to be fourth.

"I want to fight next year to win the Premier League, to win the Champions League or the Europa League, but for this there have to be signings."

Torres moved to Liverpool in 2007 from Atletico Madrid, and has proved a huge success on Merseyside with a phenomenal goals-to-games ratio.

Future

He insists that he is happy at the club but, although he says he wants to stay, 'El Nino' admits he is considering his future.

He added: "There are so many circumstances and so many things that you have to take into account that it is too soon to talk about that. But I have this and three more years of my contract.

"I've left my home and it's clear that I owe Liverpool many things, and I'm very happy here.

"The fans have treated my like one of their own, but I'm going to think about my future and hopefully it will be here. I think these fans deserve to win.

"Beyond thinking about me, I think the club deserve to get back to winning (trophies), but they know themselves that right now that it's far off.

"The fans are worried about players going, it's a problem when you start to fear that your players are going because you know it's because the club is not moving forward, but I don't think that is going to be the situation here.

"Since the arrival of (managing director) Christian Purslow, Liverpool have had an important boost, we signed with a big-money sponsor to match Real Madrid, then things are going to go forward."

------------------------------------

Last week we had Jamie Carragher saying leaving anfield wouldnt bother me at all, now this week weve got Torres says he will consider his future...not what we need AT ALL! but i cant blame Fernando for thinking maybe a new football club will be the answer for his succes! it will be such a shame if he left....and we would deffo be going backwards under Rafa if that happened! if Torres leaves i can also see Gerrard leaving...knock-on effect if Gerrard sees the only world class striker leave the club he may get up and go himself...

Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad worst thread ive ever had to start...

ok, now i am really getting irritated by all these players! it is because of ALL of them (torres included) that Liverpool FC, the greatest football club of all time is having such a pathetic and aweful season! if any of these players are loyal, then they will stay for next season and take the club where it should be!

we the fans stay loyal, even after such a horrific season, however the players who should be taking the blame, think about whether or not they should stay? Like really? players could die to be part of Liverpool FC! and these guys just coz of one aweful season, that too because them plan to leave the club Rolling Eyes

At the end of the day, players dont want to be at a club at doesnt win anything so during a season they could say "yeah 100% commited to LFC" but will leave in the summer when they finally realise the club isnt moving forward...such a shame!

I was fearing that Torres would have something to say about this season sooner or later. Don't the players realise that they have to shoulder some of blame for this joke of a season? This statement from Torres may well put Rafa under a bit more pressure now which is is the very last thing we need. They should take a leaf out of our book and stay loyal and true. This has just got more painful than pulling teeth.

and that is what i dont like about football! football includes emotions as well, but i guess thats just from the fans side and not the players! i wouldnt really mind if anyone left, coz as you said at the end they just dont want to be part of the club...however its just gonna be way to painful to see Gerrard leaving! I dont mind about anyone else, but if stevie leaves then that will be aweful, just like how i felt after owen left Crying or Very sad

The players need to see the bigger picture, Liverpool future doesnt depend on one season does it? we are bigger and stronger than this!

Benitez: Torres will not be sold

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez insists the club's supporters should not worry about the prospect of Fernando Torres leaving Anfield in the summer.

The Spaniard has reassured fans that Torres - a revelation since his 2007 transfer from Atletico Madrid - would not be sold this in a bid to fund new signings.

Benitez also said that his star striker was happy at the club - and believes that the 26-year-old will be a big part of his plans to bring a domestic title to Liverpool for the first time in over 20 years.

Asked if supporters should fear a Torres departure, Benitez told the News of the World: "I don't think so. We don't want to sell Fernando to anybody. I can talk with him and we can go forward.

"He makes his own decisions but Fernando is a professional who plays hard and is really happy here. He knows we have a lot of good players at the club."

Benitez takes his team to Old Trafford on Sunday to take on bitter rivals Manchester United, and he believes the club need to look at their near neighbours as a model for success.

United have been a dominant force in the Premier League since its creation, winning 11 championships under the stewardship of Sir Alex Ferguson.

And while Liverpool can reflect on their glory years during the 70s and 80s, Benitez believes renewing success at the club is only possible by investment in the playing squad - which he believes will narrow the gap that exists on the pitch between the two sides.

"In the past Liverpool were breaking all the records and making all the signings but over the last 13 years that is different," Benitez explained. "We have to be proud of the history but now we have to manage in a different way.

"I could read Sir Alex Ferguson's words about what he wanted to do when he became their manager but it is different now.

"If you talk about what they have and what we have, it is different, especially with money. We have to reduce this gap in the transfer market and on the pitch."
